From the Covington Village Council Meeting:
Thursday, January 23, 2014 at the Village office at 1 S. High St. Covington.
Scott Meyer, executive director of the Miami County Park District was present to update council on the Ohio bike path. He stated that the 300 miles of paved path in Southwest Ohio is the longest continuous in the US. The north/south connectors will be complete by 7/31/14. After that, the focus will be on the east/west spur from Urbana to Union City. Mr. Meyer urged council to keep the high elevation through Covington because it would be a unique feature.
Maintenance of the path in the Village limits would be the responsibility of the Village. He estimated approx $4000/mile to seal asphalt. The park district may look at crushed limestone/grit for a cost effective alternative in rural areas. Mr. Meyer stated that the path needs to be able to handle emergency vehicles. Chris Haines, local chairman of the bike path was also present. He stated that the committee has an easement from the park to Rangeline road for the path. The village portion would run from approximately Grant St to the park. ODOT standards dictate fencing/railing requirements.
